The Rule of Merit and Seniority : IT IS ALL ABOUT COMMITMENT
Is 'Age' a relevant measure of talent?
Is 'Age' should be the measurement of rank in any organization?
The answer is No.
"Absolutely nowhere shall age automatically determine rank"
The Rule of St. Benedict (Rule, 63)
In determining ranking and promotion, what should be the prior basis? Merit or Seniority?
The answer is Merit. Seniority comes next.
No one shall consider seniority as basis of promotion or ranking. Yes, he/ she has given a longer time of service in an organization but then, experience, knowledge, and contribution for the betterment of the organization is a big factor of promoting a person. Time of service is not on the top list. We are not saying that it is not an essential factor but come to think of it. A 60 year old man who is already 30 years on your organization but then he chooses to be just what he used to be comparing to an employee who served the organization for almost 3 years but then contributed a lot for the organization's development .... who are you gonna choose?
Let us enumerate the some iportant things regarding this matter:
1. Seniority encourages long term committment
2. Seniority provides an explicit measure for experience
3. Seniority provides an established and organized system
4. Seniority institutionalizes organizational continuity.
Did you see age? Did you see time of service? NO.
Seniority means you are respected on a certain organization because of your committment, experience, attitude towards work and influence to others. Making a name means a lot. It needs sacrifice to earn it.
In our country, age is not an issue. There are people on a high position at an early age. That's because they work hard, study new things and committed with their work. There are people who are serving us for decades but still choose to be just like what they are when they first work ---- comfort zone. Playing safe.
An example of these are young professionals who are aggressive to be on top. They work to earn respect, they try to gain more experience and at the end of the day, they find themselves being respected by people around them because of their committment. People who are older than them, knowledgeable than them.
To sum it up, Seniority is not about age or time of service, it is about commitment and the eagerness to learn more and serve more. Seniority is the state of being respected and look up to regardless of what age.
